Description
In our six-week On-Camera Acting 1 online course, you will use the acting techniques employed by your favorite movie actors to create convincing onscreen performances. You’ll get video of your final performances to use for your actor demo reel. This is a scene study course where you will work on scripts from movies and bring them to life every week in class. You’ll receive realtime feedback from your instructor, actor/director Sean A. Mulvihill, Artistic Director of the Exuberant Theatre Company.
Each class you will work on:
- authentic, truthful acting
- using your eyes to express your thoughts in closeup
- how to adjust your performance for the camera distance
- creating a rich, imagined environment even in an audition
The course will last six weeks with six 2-hour classes. Here is what we will work on each meeting:
Week 1: Acting Fundamentals. We will learn what our neutral body is and how to shed our conditioning to disappear into the role. We’ll work on our first script and learn about actor “homework”: the process of investigating a script for clues the author intends the actor to find.
Week 2: The Relationship. Even if an actor is doing a soliloquy, they are talking to the audience. For acting to be successful, we need to be checking and seeing how our words are landing on our partner. In this class, we will focus on building an explosive and multi-faceted relationship with our scene partner.
Week 3: Serving the Story. When working on-camera, scene are shot out of sequence, so it is the actor’s responsibility to know where the scene comes in the story. We will work on creating a full inner life for our characters so that we are living appropriately in the story moment of the scene.
Week 4: Opposites. In first passes at a new scene, we will learn how to look past cliche to find the nuances of the script. In a well-written script, actors rarely say out loud what they are actually thinking or feeling. It is up to us to discover the true thoughts and feelings of the character–and explore the opposite feeling as well. This creates a more volatile and interesting performance.
Week 5: The Eyes. When we are acting in closeup, our eyes say everything and the camera misses nothing. The most important secret for the actor in closeup is to have something for the conscious mind to deal with in order to give life to the eyes. We will work on our script in closeup and get those eyes to sparkle with life.
Week 6: On Set. We will treat this last class as a day on set, prepping and filming our big scene. We’ll make sure we have good lighting for our self-tapes and we’ll record the performances to use for our acting demo reels.
