Unleash your comic creativity in this 6-week online course (6 classes, 2 hours each). In Sketch Comedy Writing 1: Find Your Funny, you will learn the basics of sketch comedy writing while writing your own comedy sketches.

In this course you will analyze successful sketch comedy and comprehend the mechanics that generate laughter. You will harness that understanding to create and revise your own comedy sketches. You’ll also get verbal feedback from your instructor and classmates to help your revise your work into something you’ll want to share with the world!

You’ll discover:

-Your unique comedic voice

-How to distill the “fun part” of the scene and look at it from various angles to create maximum laughter

-How to turn your personal opinions into comedy sketches

The class is extremely interactive and you will get a chance to write and share every week! Here’s an overview of the course:

Week 1: Comedy Genres: We will analyze existing successful comedy sketches and classify them into genres. This will give us a framework to write our first sketches. We’ll also do an exploration of our comedic voice which will lead to our first written sketch.

Week 2: Finding the Fun: We will read our first week’s sketches aloud and find where the fun and games are, then dissect and re-envision them from various viewpoints. With your newfound skills, you’ll be able to easily brainstorm revisions of your first two scripts for maximum laughs.

Week 3: The Parody: One of the staples of TV sketch comedy, we will learn how to find the ridiculous in the everyday and turn it into comedy gold. You’ll write your third sketch.

Week 4: Punching Up the Humor to Eleven: We have 3 rough sketches already written! Now we will go through our favorites with a fine tooth comb, looking for the comedy diamonds in the rough.

Week 5: Paring it Down: Most rough drafts are overwritten, so now we take away what detracts from the jokes and leave only what is downright hilarious.

Week 6: Polishing and Tweaks: We go through one more time to make sure we’ve mined all of that platinum humor from our earlier comedic digging, finalizing our scripts for our mini-packet/writing portfolio.

About the Instructor:

Hi, Sean A. Mulvihill. I’m the Artistic Director of the Exuberant Theatre Company. We have been running a comedy show at the Broadway Comedy Club and other NYC venues since 2018. I just moved to San Diego and am very excited to work with you.
